What to pack for a Hilton Head Vacation

Whether it is your first time to Hilton Head or you have been many times before, knowing what to pack for a Hilton Head Vacation is key to your travel success. There is nothing more frustrating than spending all of your hard-earned money on the perfect travel spot and not bringing what you need with you. In order to pack correctly, it is imperative to know what your main purpose of the trip is.

Plan ahead

Packing the night before you leave on a big trip might not be the best way to make sure you have everything you need. Planning ahead of time for your beach trip to Hilton Head allows you to put things in order before packing. If you are preparing a few weeks before your trip, it will allow you to get the things on your list ready. Otherwise, you might pay more for the same items once you get on the Island.

What is the weather like in Hilton Head Island

Since Hilton Head Island is in South Carolina, the weather does change some throughout the year. This means that it is important to know what the average temperatures are in the different seasons of the year. Knowing the temperatures, you will better know how to pack for your visit.

  • Spring: 70’s and 80’s for highs and lows in the 50’s and 60’s
  • Summer: 80’s and 90’s for highs and lows in the 70’s
  • Fall: 70’s for highs and lows in the 50’s and 60’s
  • Winter: 60’s for highs and lows in the 40’s

In the warmer months you will want to bring the normal clothing you would have at the beach like; bathing suit, sunglasses, beach bag, sunscreen, & flip flops. When it cools down in the late Fall and Winter, some warmer clothing will be needed.

No matter what time of year you visit Hilton Head, be sure to pack some nice clothes along with your normal beach clothes. There are so many great places to eat and some of them will require dressing up a little. Pack accordingly and have something nice to go out on that special date.

Games and Fun Items to bring to Hilton Head

Once you have been to the pristine beaches of Hilton Head, you never want to leave. Bring some fun beach toys with you when you come and start some competitive fun with your family and friends on the beach. The Atlantic coast beaches offer hard packed sand when they tide is out. This is a perfect setting for some beach sand fun.

  • Bocce Ball
  • Frisbee
  • Spike Ball
  • Portable Corn Hole
  • Ladder Toss
  • Sand Toys – Buckets, Shovels
  • Water Toys

And, this is just the beginning. Reading your favorite book or magazine can also bring great enjoyment while sitting in the sun or in the shade of your umbrella or canopy.

How to get your beach items to and from the beach?

If you are able to book one of the Hilton Head Hotels that are Oceanfront, getting items to the beach is much easier. Another option would be to get a VRBO vacation rental in Hilton Head on the Beach.

If you are not able to stay on the beach, it is important to think about how you will get there. Each of the plantations and other places to stay will either have its own beach access or you can visit the many public beaches.

  • Bike Ride
  • Drive your vehicle
  • Walk

Public beaches have parking for your vehicle and might also be within bike riding distance. If you decide to ride a bike to the beach, having a pull-behind cart to pack your beach items makes the trip much easier. You will also want to be sure to have locks for your bikes so you can secure them while you play.

Stay Hydrated

The best way to stay hydrated on the beach is to bring a cooler filled with water, and other drinks you might like. Some of the larger coolers have wheels on them and can be much easier to move around on hard surfaces. Keeping your waters and other drinks cold in the refrigerator and then transferring to a cooler full of ice will guarantee a cold drink, right when you need one.

Food

Packing some snacks, and your lunch is a great way to stay on the beach all day. Chilled sandwiches, cookies, and chips are a few easy options to take on the beaches of Hilton Head. Having a second cooler with ice packs is a great way to keep everything fresh on the trip to the beach and in the hot sun. Keep your food and drink coolers in the shade and they will last a very long time.

Keep Cool

There are many ways to cool off on the beach. Thankfully, the ocean water is right in front of you and beckons you to cool off whenever you need to. When you are just chilling in your beach chair, having an umbrella or a large canopy helps tremendously in the open sun. Cooling towels are also a great option for staying cooled off in the hot sun.

Don’t forget to charge your batteries?

Nowadays, having a full charge on your phone, tablet, and other electronic devices is essential. Even for a beach trip. Portable speakers are fun as well. Connect your phone to your portable speakers and enjoy your music throughout the day. When taking your phone or tablet to the beach, a great way to keep them safe from the elements (sand and water) is to place them in a Ziploc bag.

Bringing extra charging battery packs is a great solution for keeping your electronics running all day. You can get the individual battery packs or a larger one to charge everything at once.

Capture the memories

It is pretty easy to capture your family memories on the beach. Most people take their phone with them and can pull it out when needed to take those fun family antics at any time. If you decide to take a camera on the beach, just be sure to protect it from the sand and water when it is not being used. It is also important to keep them out of the heat of the sun.

Every trip with your family can be a special one. Taking pictures and videos of your events are wonderful as you look back on them.

Storage Bags

Plastic storage bags are essential for any trip but especially important when you go to the beach. Keeping the sand out of your phone, tablet and other devices will ensure that you keep everything in good working order. Cheap bags are okay for many things but when you really want to protect your belongings, the name-brand bags might win out for a beach trip.

Protect your skin

Don’t forget the sunscreen! A sunburn can ruin your trip and even when it is cloudy and you don’t think you are getting much sun, you most likely are. So, be sure to protect your skin from the damage of the sun by keeping lots of sunscreen with you at all times. Lip protection is also important. You can pick up some lip balm with sunscreen in it to protect your lips as well. Sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, cover-ups, umbrellas, and canopies are all essential for a successful beach trip. If the sun gets to you one day, be sure to also have some aloe vera gel to help with the burn and pain. Being prepared for the sun is your best defense and will lead to a wonderful trip.

Wet Wipes

Hand sanitizer is great for many times you want to clean up but having some sanitizing wipes really gets you cleaned off. No one wants to handle food once they have been playing in the ocean and the sand, right? Get some wet wipes and keep them on hand and you will be glad that you did.

First Aid Kit

Hiilton Head Island is one of the most enjoyable vacations you could ever have. However, you never know when you might have a small accident. Scratches and scrapes can happen at any time and keeping a first aid kit in your car is a great way to always have what you need. Having some simple items on hand can be a lifesaver. Be sure to keep some Bandaids, triple-antibiotic ointment, and gauze with you at all times. Most of the pharmacies will have a first aid kit that has most of the items you would need. Make sure you pick one up before you travel down to the Beaches on Hilton Head.

For the Kids

If you are bringing your kids with you, a lot of additional preparation needs to go into packing. Kids love playing at the beach, building sand castles in the sand and playing in the pool areas. Since your trip will cater to them as well, be sure to bring the special items they will need to make this a memorable trip.

Stroller, pull behind cart for bikes

There are over 100 miles of walking and biking trails on Hilton Head Island. If you have little ones and you are planning to go on walks together, bringing a stroller is a great option. This way, when they get tired, you can easily stroll them along and continue on with your day as planned. If you are bringing bikes, or as most people do, rent your bikes, be sure to get a pull-behind kids cart or a kids seat for the back of the bike. Pulling the little ones behind is fun for them and makes it easier on you when you want to take a ride.

Favorite play items for kids

Most kids have something they consider a favorite item. Don’t leave this behind or you might regret it for your entire trip. Plush animals, toys, and electronic gadgets to play on while you are driving along. All of these things make the trip easier and more fun for the parents and the children.
