Recycling Beach Gear in Hilton Head
Every once in a while you run across something that is so amazing, that it has to be shared. This is one of those times. Finnegan’s Sharing Shack is a new initiative between the University of South Carolina Beaufort and the Town of Hilton Head Island. It is sponsored by the University Center for Even Management and Hospitality Training. It’s main goal is to reduce waste by recycling beach items like;
- Boogie Boards
- Beach Chairs
- Umbrellas
- Beach Toys
- Tents
- Towels
How it works
Hilton Head’s Beach Rules do not allow items to be left on the beach from sundown to sunup. The main reason this rule is set in place is to protect the loggerhead turtles who might not be able to make their nests due to the items left behind. So, why would people leave so many items behind? Many beachgoers will purchase items for the beach, but might not have space to take them home with them. This provides a treasure of beach items to be gathered at the end of each day. Each night, staff of Finnegan’s Sharing Shack as well as volunteers, scour the beaches for any items that are left behind.
Great for Everyone
While this process does take time, it helps to keep the beaches clean and safer for the local wildlife. Since all of the Beach Gear is given away for free from Finnegan’s Sharing Shack, this may also benefit you on your next beach visit.
