Walking Paths

After you pay your parking meter fee, it is off to the Beach. Folly Field Beach Park has a nice, raised wooden boardwalk to get you to the sand on the beach. This walkway takes you past the public restrooms and outdoor showers and across the primary dunes with plentiful sea oats. The walking distance is about 400 feet along the wooden path.

At the end of the wooden path, a gentle ramp eases you down to the sand. There are no stairs which make it easier for wheelchairs and other wheeled items to get to the sand. A beach mat will get you across the soft sand to the harder-packed sand. This is also nice for anyone pulling a cart with beach supplies or if you are walking your bikes to the beach. Seasonally, there will be lifeguards on the beach.

Folly Field Beach

After you make it down to the beach, it is time to find a spot to set up for your time at the Atlantic Ocean. Folly Field Beach is on the Atlantic Ocean side of Hilton Head Island. Listening to the crashing of the waves makes for a wonderful time on the white sands and hard-packed surfaces.

Knowing the tide schedule at Hilton Head can help you choose the best position on the sand. If the tide is heading in, find a place closer to the soft sand; if the tide is heading out, the hard-packed areas get longer until the tide changes again.

The beaches at Hilton Head Island are owned by the state of South Carolina. This means that, once you are in the beach area, you can walk the entire length of the beaches. Exploring the island by taking a long stroll on the beach or riding a bike is fun. If you walk to your right (looking at the ocean), you will pass the Sea Cloisters, Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, and then Sea Pines. On the left, you have private homes, the The Westin Hilton Head Resort, and Port Royal Plantation.
